General

The Basics

What are "Learners"?
Anyone who is looking to get some advice, practical feedback, inspiration, insights, etc., from someone more experienced (namely, the Mentor or Coach). We could use the term “mentees”, but personally we find that a bit confusing. Plus, the mission of Key Lessons Learned is to support learning and knowledge sharing in a professional context, so using the term “Learners” highlights that aspect.
Are you addressing Mentors or Coaches? There is a difference.
Key Lessons Learned is open to both Mentors and Coaches. We know that there is a formal difference between the two roles, but we use the terms interchangeably throughout the web site. Most often we say “Mentors” for brevity, but we actually mean both Mentors and Coaches. That may not be formally correct, but Key Lessons Learned is open to all experienced professionals who are willing to help less experienced ones. To us, what you call that role is secondary.
How do you ensure quality?
We have a review system in place, through which Mentors/Coaches and Learners can review each other, after having had at least one mentoring session together. The reviews consist of a star rating (1 to 5 stars) and a short feedback text. The reviews are saved in each user’s profile and are visible together with the rest of the data of the profile.
How can I be sure that the information discussed in a mentoring/coaching session is kept confidential?
It is part of the General Terms and Conditions of Key Lessons Learned that all topics discussed during mentoring/coaching sessions stay confidential, unless otherwise agreed upon by both Mentor and Learner. All Mentors and Learners have to state their agreement to the General Terms and Conditions when they subscribe to our platform.
Can I be both a Mentor and a Learner?
Absolutely! For this you have to get the Mentor+Learner subscription.

For Mentors

How much time do I have to invest into the mentoring?
That’s completely up to you. From a few hours per week to a few hours per year, everything’s possible. You agree together with your learners how often you want to have mentoring sessions and how long the sessions should be.
I would like to help less experienced people, but I don't know if I'm qualified to be a mentor...
As a rule of thumb, if you’ve been working for at least 5 years, you’ve probably already gathered a lot of knowledge and experience. What best qualifies you as a mentor is the willingness to share that and to help someone else succeed in their career. Being a mentor doesn’t mean you need to have all the perfect answers.
I would like to help, but I'm not sure on what topics I could mentor someone.
There is a list of suggested topics for mentoring in the registration questionnaire. We hope that will serve as inspiration and will help you come up with additional ideas for mentoring areas.

For Learners

How do you make sure you have good mentors?
There is a review system on Key Lessons Learned through which mentors/coaches and learners can review each other. We also encourage mentors to only offer mentoring in areas where they have at least 5 years on-the-job experience.

If you have a bad or unsatisfying mentoring experience through Key Lessons Learned, please get in touch with us.

User Profiles

The Basics

How can I create a profile on Key Lessons Learned?
Your profile is created when you register on the platform. In the beginning, your profile will only contain your first and last name (which you have to provide when you register). You can fill in the rest of the data right away or at a later point.
Can I edit my profile after I create it?
Sure! You can edit your profile any time.

For Mentors

Who has access to my profile on Key Lessons Learned?
You can set whether your profile should be visible to Learners and other Mentors. If you keep your profile private, it will not be included in our list of Mentors (to which all registered Learners and Mentors have access). In this case, only we can match you with a Learner and you will not receive any direct mentoring requests from Learners.

For Learners

Who has access to my profile on Key Lessons Learned?
As a Learner, your profile only becomes visible to Mentors you apply with. Other Learners and Mentors don’t have access to your profile.
Mentor-Learner Matches

The Basics

Who matches a Mentor and a Learner on Key Lessons Learned?
Learners can apply directly with the Mentors whose profiles are public (in other words, accessible to registered Learners and other Mentors). The Mentor then receives the Learner’s application for mentoring and can accept or reject it.

Learners can also ask Key Lessons Learned to match them with a Mentor. Key Lessons Learned also has access to private Mentor profiles, which are not displayed in the ‘public’ list of Mentors. A Mentor contacted in this way by Key Lessons Learned on behalf of a Learner can also accept or reject the mentoring request.

For Mentors

Who decides who I mentor or coach?
You do. You can get direct applications from Learners or we may contact you if we find a suitable match with a Learner. In either case, you are free to accept or deny the request for mentoring.
What happens if I accept a request for mentoring?
You and the Learner will have each other’s contact data and you will set a first meeting. After this first meeting, you will decide together if you want to continue the mentoring relationship.
What happens when I want to stop mentoring someone?
Both you and the Learner can end the mentoring relationship. Once the relationship is ended, you will not be able to charge the Learner for additional mentoring sessions. If the Learner wants to be mentored by you again, he/she will have to apply again for mentoring with you, and you can decide to accept or deny that request.
Can I have several Learners at the same time?
Of course, that’s no problem. Mentoring sessions are 1-on-1, but you can have several ongoing mentoring relationships.

For Learners

How do I find a Mentor or Coach?
Once you register as a Learner, you can either browse through the Mentor profiles and apply directly with any of the Mentors, or you can ask us to find a Mentor for you. Mentors can decide whether they want to have their profiles visible to Learners or if they prefer us to match them with potential Learners.
Can I browse through the Mentor profiles without being subscribed to your platform?
No, that’s not possible. You have to register with us in order to see the profiles of our Mentors. The Learner subscription has a one-month free trial period, so if you don’t like Key Lessons Learned or don’t find a suitable Mentor during that time, you can cancel your Learner membership free of charge.
Do I have to contact a Mentor or will Mentors contact me?
You have to initiate a mentoring relationship, either by applying directly with a Mentor or by asking us to find a Mentor for you. In either case, the Mentor has the choice to accept or reject the mentoring request. Mentors don’t have access to Learner profiles until a Learner sends them a mentoring request.
What happens if I want to end a mentoring relationship?
Both you and the Mentor can end the mentoring relationship. Once the relationship is ended, the Mentor will not be able to charge you for additional mentoring sessions. If you want to be mentored by the same Mentor again, you will have to apply again for mentoring with him/her.
Can I have several Mentors at the same time?
Of course, that’s no problem. Mentoring sessions are 1-on-1, but you can have several ongoing mentoring relationships.
Can you find a good Mentor for me? How do you do the matching?
Yes, we can do that. Since Mentors can choose to have their profiles private, that means that you as a Learner don’t have access to all the mentor profiles we have on Key Lessons Learned. If you prefer to let us match you with a Mentor, you have to fill in a short questionnaire, so that we understand what kind of Mentor you’re looking for and what your goals for the mentoring are. We will then look for a suitable Mentor for you and we do this free of charge.
Mentoring Sessions

The Basics

How and where do mentoring sessions take place?
That’s up to each Mentor-Learner pair to decide and arrange together. It could be meetings in person, online audio calls, online video calls, etc. You have complete freedom to decide. If meeting in person, the Mentor might charge for his/her travel time to the meeting place. This needs to be clarified and agreed upon in advance with the Learner.
How often do mentoring sessions take place?
That’s up to each Mentor-Learner pair to decide together.
How long is a mentoring session?
That’s up to each Mentor-Learner pair to decide together.
How are mentoring sessions scheduled and paid for?
Through the following steps:

1. For each mentoring session that they plan to have together, in advance of the session, the Mentor and the Learner agree together on a date, start time and planned duration.

2. The Learner then enters this data into the Key Lessons Learned platform.

3. If the Mentor charges for the mentoring sessions, then the system will calculate the price of the mentoring session (based on its planned duration) and issue an invoice to the Learner.

4. Once the Learner pays the invoice, Key Lessons Learned will transfer the Mentor’s fee to his/her account.

What happens if the mentoring session takes more or less time than planned? How does the charging work then?
The Learner is charged in advance of the mentoring session, based on the planned duration for the session (which the Learner enters into our system and the Mentor has to approve). This cannot be changed anymore afterwards, so the price will stay the same even if the actual session takes more or less time than planned in advance.

For Mentors

If I accept a Learner's request for mentoring, do I have an obligation to mentor him/her a set number of times or over a set time span?
No, not at all. Once you accept a Learner’s mentoring request, you can get in touch with each other and schedule a first mentoring session together. You decide together on when and where this session will take place (in person, online, etc.), and on the duration you plan for it. After the session you decide together with the Learner whether you want to have additional sessions or stop the mentoring relationship.

For Learners

What if I want only a one-time session with a Mentor, not recurring sessions?
No problem, you can do that. When you apply for mentoring, you can specify what type of sessions you would like to have (one-time or recurring), so that we have an idea about the engagement you have in mind. But in any case, you and your Mentor decide after your first meeting if you want to have subsequent sessions or not.
Pricing of the Mentoring Sessions

The Basics

Who sets the prices for the mentoring/coaching sesions?
The Mentors do. They are free to set their own fees or to mentor Learners for free if they want.

For Mentors

Can I charge different prices to different Learners?
No, for now that’s not possible. You set the price per hour and all your Learners pay the same price.

You can change the price of your mentoring sessions any time, but then that new price will apply to all your Learners.

How do I get paid?
You set the price per hour. Before having a mentoring session with a Learner, you agree on a planned duration for that session, and the Learner will get charged based on that duration and the price you set per hour. Once the Learner pays that invoice, we transfer you the amount due.
Do I have to pay any fees as a Mentor/Coach?
The Mentor subscription is free on Key Lessons Learned.

If you earn less than CHF 2300 / year through mentoring sessions on Key Lessons Learned, then you don’t have to pay any fees at all.  We do charge Learners a small administrative and payment processing fee on top of your mentoring fee though.

If you earn more than CHF 2300 / year through Key Lessons Learned, then you must pay the social contributions which are obligatory by law.

What if I want to mentor Learners for free?
No problem, that works. It’s completely up to you to decide this.

For Learners

Do I have to pay for the mentoring sessions?
That depends on whether your Mentor charges for the mentoring sessions or not. You can see that in his/her profile.
How do I pay for the mentoring sessions?
In advance of each mentoring session, you and your Mentor have to set a date, start time and planned duration for the mentoring session. You as the Learner enter this data into Key Lessons Learned. Once the Mentor approves it and if the Mentor charges for the mentoring sessions, we will send you an invoice for the cost of the mentoring session, based on its planned duration and on the Mentor’s fee.
Subscriptions

The Basics

How does the subscription system work?
You can register on Key Lessons Learned as a Mentor, as a Learner, or as both a Mentor and a Learner. See the Subscriptions page for more information. As long as you have a subscription, you have the corresponding role on the platform and have access to the features corresponding to that role.
Can I change the role I have on Key Lessons Learned (Learner, Mentor, or both) after subscribing?
Yes, you can change your role at the end of your subscription period, by cancelling your existing subscription and then getting a new subscription for the role that you would like to have. For instance, if you have subscribed as a Learner with the 2 months subscription, you have to cancel that subscription. Your subscription will be in the ‘pending cancellation’ until the end of the 2 months. After that point in time, your ‘Learner – 2 Months’ subscription will be cancelled and you can get a new subscription.

If you would like to change your subscription before the end of the subscription interval, please contact our support team at support@keylessonslearned.com.

Is it possible to switch subscriptions?
To change your existing subscription, you have to first cancel it. Your subscription would then go into the ‘pending cancellation’ state until the end of the subscription interval for which you have already paid. At the end of the subscription interval, your subscription will get permanently cancelled and you will be able to get a new subscription.

If you would like to change your subscription before the end of the subscription interval, please contact our support team at support@keylessonslearned.com.

What happens if I cancel my subscription?
An active subscription can be cancelled at any time. From the moment it is cancelled, the subscription will have the ‘pending cancellation’ state, meaning that you can still use it until the end of the current billing period (or until the end of the trial period, if the subscription was cancelled during the trial period).

Once a subscription which is ‘pending cancellation’ reaches the end of the trial period or of the billing cycle, the subscription will be automatically permanently cancelled and you will not be able to use the platform anymore as either a Learner or a Mentor. You will still have access to your account and will be able to resubscribe to that subscription. If you resubscribe, there will be no trial period for any of the paid subscriptions.

While a subscription is in the ‘pending cancellation’ state, you can resubscribe to it any time. Any payments made before cancelling will be prorated for the subscription. While you have a subscription in the ‘pending cancellation’ state, you can’t get a new subscription of a different kind.

If you have several cancelled subscriptions, you can only resubscribe to the last subscription that you cancelled.

How do the free trials work?
Both paid subscriptions (Learner and Mentor+Learner) have a one-month free trial period when you subscribe. During this trial period, you can cancel your subscription at any time and you will not be charged anything.
What if I want to switch my subscription during the free trial?
If you would like to change your subscription before the end of the trial period, please contact our support team at support@keylessonslearned.com.
What if I cancel my subscription during the free trial period?
In that case, your subscription will go into the ‘pending cancellation’ state. Before the end of the trial period, you can resubscribe to it any time and the trial period will continue for its remaining duration.

If you do not resubscribe by the end of the trial period, the subscription will be permanently cancelled. If you resubscribe to that same subscription afterwards, you will not be granted a trial period again.

Can I view my whole payment history on Key Lessons Learned?
Yes, that’s possible. You can view your existing orders under your Account Dashboard > Orders. Here you find the information about the date, status and cost of all your orders.

An order is created in the following situations:

  • When you first register to the site and get a subscription.
  • When you resubscribe to a subscription which is ‘pending cancellation’.
  • When you resubscribe to a subscription which has been cancelled.
  • When you switch an active subscription, an order is created for the new subscription.

For Mentors

How does the Mentor subscription work?
The Mentor subscription is free and renews automatically once per year. You can cancel it anytime and still benefit from it until its next renewal date. If you’d like to cancel it definitively before the year is over, please get in touch with our support team.
I registered as a Mentor, but I'd like to also have the Learner role now. Is that possible?
